I’ve been looking for a small truck to use for camping and maybe some household/yard chores, and have been considering a mid 90s GMC Sonoma that’s been on Craigslist for the past week, the mileage is pretty low, the price is decent, and it has a nice color matched camper shell.

Kinja'd!!!

My only concerns are: 1. Little info in ad, 2. Only one picture, 3. Picture clearly taken about 2 hours away from where the ad says the truck is (based on background), 4. Ad taken down for a few days, then put back up 5. Seller responded that it was sold and took the ad down again, 6. 24 hours later, seller emailed and asked me to call if still interested.

Does this seem like someone trying to sell a vehicle and getting jerked around by flakey CL buyers, or does it seem like the seller is less than legit?

Pic similar, except advertised one was emerald green.

Probably flakey CL buyers, but I'd exercise due caution

could be a rusted out POS and the previous buyer walked away.

Theres a strong likelihood that it is quite rusty. Especially if it spent some time a bit further north.

It’s worth a look but certainly strange. I don’t know why you would take the ad down unless the person has signed over the paperwork. Imo it’s not sold until it’s no longer in my name and I’m paid.

It’s weird but I would think if they had a POS they weren’t disclosing was a POS they would leave the ad up knowing most people would walk away after a closer look.

like a Volvo I went to look at, the whole underside was cobbled together with some shitty bismuth/fibreglass stuff, seller insisted it was rust free and the photos did not disclose the rust/hack job repair. He kept saying a motorcycle mechanic repaired it like that meant something (????).

My money would be on weirdly honest person who thought “I’ll give you 1100$ 4 it. B ther tmmrw w a traler” meant it was SOLD, and when they inevitably no showed they put it back up. Sale could have fallen through pending an inspection as well, that’s happened to me. I wouldn’t think it’s not worth your time.

They probably don’t understand that recent pics matter “because it still looks the same” and they’re not about to go take pictures of their car just for an ad. Lots of idiots use a bunch of Instagram/Snapchat photos of their car for ads (deal breaker for me but that’s because I don’t want to meet the seller, not anything the car did)

Could be, that does sound like the usual. Of course, I can’t get a cashiers check today, and would have to go through the hassle of a money order, run down with a 1-way rental car to drive it back up. If they had responded quickly, I could have planned. Now, I’ve got a couple hours of daylight left in this  weekend and can't do anything else until next Saturday.

That sounds pretty typical for Craigslist/private sales.

I’m assuming it would be more cash than you’re comfortable carrying, but have you considered interac E transfer ? it can be done through your phone and the seller can confirm the funds have cleared on the spot if they also have a cell phone.

I work at a large bank, and the experience has soured me on money transfer apps. Mostly related to elderly people who can barely operate a cell phone wanting to come in and file disputes because they sent money they didn’t want to send, or it came out of the wrong account, or they sent too much, or the other person can’t get to it, or its visible in their account but not available to spend yet because it hasn’t posted, etc. etc. I’m just done with all of that, frankly, if I ever get another job, I’ve resolved never to walk into a bank ever again.

That sounds like a uniquely American experience (please don’t tell me you live in Prague or something)
